Got Stuck? Join Hands with Turacoz to Streamline your Pharmacovigilance Process

Whenever there is a new drug on the market the biggest question surrounding it is about its safety and any possible adverse effects. Drugs are created for the safety and betterment of human lives, so it is very important to be sure of the usage of the drug, its side-effects, etc.

This is where Pharmacovigilance comes into the picture. If you are a pharma company/drug manufacturer, you might want someone to offer you with pharmacovigilance support.

Pharmacovigilance deals with 2 main aspects:

v  Safety: how safe is the drug for consumption & how they work on patient.
v  Potency: how effective is the drug in treatment of various diseases and what effect does it has on patients.

What is Pharmacovigilance?

Pharmacovigilance is also known as ‘drug safety’. It includes assembling, inspection, controlling and interception of adverse effects of drugs & therapies. This is a scientific and process-oriented field in the pharmaceutical world.

It is concerned with every facet of drug development-course, starting from pre-clinical progress to post-market control. This establishes pharmacovigilance as the bottom edge of a life sciences firm.

What is ‘adverse event’?

The ‘adverse event’ for any drugs is the side effect that a drug has on human body. When a drug reacts with the human body and creates a negative effect, then it can lead to serious & dangerous effects on health and a patient might have to go through hospitalization, immobility, permanent impairment or even death in the worse scenario.

It is compulsory for all the clinical trial research auditors to report the adverse effects of the drugs even if there is only a speculation or doubt.

The role of pharmacovigilance is to learn whether the side effects of the drug are within the accepted limit as compared to the usefulness of the drug. In simpler terms, it assesses whether the effectiveness of a drug in treating a disease is worthy enough to let slide some side effects it causes.

Why is Pharmacovigilance so important?

v  It plays a crucial role in drug development. If a company wants to develop, synthesize & commercialize its drugs then it must stick to the rules & regulations. These regulations ask for the efficiency of a drug, its advantages & other benefits for the patients.

v  The main aim of pharmacovigilance is to access drug- and patient safety. Drug safety ensures that the drug does not cause any unwanted and negative effect on the patients during the drug development cycle or when it is ready for sale in the market.

v  Drugs are constantly kept under observation for any side-effects on patients & any new data if generated is organized and handed over to the health authorities at frequent intervals.

A Sad State of Freedom!

We celebrate our 72nd Independence Day on 15th August 2018. After a long struggle and sacrifices made by our freedom fighters, we finally escaped from the jaws of Britishers in the year 1947, on this day, and since then have been celebrating this day by announcing it as a gazetted holiday across the nation.

Many things have evolved since then. The world’s 2nd most populated nation is the 6th largest economy in terms of nominal GDP & 3rd largest by Purchasing Power Parity. With the literacy rate of 74%, India has the 3rd largest higher education system after United States & China. We rank 5th in the Military Strength Index.

India is progressing in various segments and is heading towards developing into a strengthened democracy in near future. But with so many things on the cards now, can we really say we are free?

What is freedom?

It is being you without anyone’s permission. It is the freedom of choice, thoughts, speech and leading the way you choose.

But for us, Indians, the definition of freedom is confined to the freedom from British rule. That's it! We really need to expand the spectrum of our vision of freedom. Over 70 years down the lane and we are still striving hard to free ourselves from so many evil social customs & practices and other socio-political-environmental-cultural-moral issues.

With the accelerating number of rapes and sexual assaults every year, India has turned into one of the most dangerous countries for women. A land where women are worshipped in form of deities, holds gruesome reality for the real women living here. No news is complete without a report on molestation, assault, and rape of women of any age, be it a 4-month-old or 60-year-old woman. A woman in India, irrespective of her age, cannot roam freely on the streets.

The gender stereotypes have been contributing equally to the degrading condition of women. Women are still not treated equal to men in various parts of the country and they do not enjoy as much freedom as men.

Though India has witnessed an increment in the literacy rate of women and now more women are penetrating the professional field but still, a lot needs to be looked at to enhance the overall state of women.

Female feticide is a problem which has prevailed for a long time in the country and is still going rock-strong. People still need to understand the fact that having a girl or boy doesn’t make a difference today. Women are still demanded to perform all the household chores and give lesser priority to their career.

No need to point out the state of the environment in the country. We have some of the most polluted cities in the world. Who is taking responsibility for that?

The massive unemployment in this youth-oriented nation is also a noticeable problem which needs to be solved. The human resources here are not put to optimum use.

Development is advancing forward but Alas! In India, people fight to drift backward. To battle to have an OBC certificate is what people do and to have it their way they destroy public properties like buses, railway tracks, etc. and thwart the national harmony.

The reservation system has made the roots of development and quality so hollow that it can fall anytime and crush masses. The deserving people here don’t get a chance just because they belong to the “General” category. All the privileges are with the OBCs & SC/STs.

The reservation system came into existence with an aim of encouraging the backward classes to develop but has turned out to be the biggest problem for the nation. Be it the vote-bank politics or anything else, it revolves around casteism.

Is this how the nation is unified, by segregating people based on caste & religion?

We are fantastic at blame games. Shifting the blame on government, system, etc. will not iron out the problem. We need to do our bit to see the nation flourish. What right do we have to boast about our freedom when it is not even freedom! It is just the end of British slavery.

I bet this was not the freedom that we called for. We might have freed ourselves from the rule of the British but are still slaves to our own orthodox thinking and customs.

A human chooses to be a slave because gaining freedom is always difficult.

Waving flags, screaming “Vande Mataram”, decorating your faces in Tri-color, wearing traditional attire, singing national & patriotic songs, etc. on a particular day defines you as a patriot today.
Sit back and reflect:
Ø  What are you doing for your nation?
Ø  What is your definition of nationalism?
Ø  What are you doing to protect the honor of your motherland?
Ø  Does showing-off your love for the nation on a specific day makes you a patriot?
Ø  Is blaming the government and political bodies the best you can do?
Ø  What are your duties as the citizen of the nation? Ever thought about it?
The freedom being talked about here can be achieved only when the above questions are answered, and the mentioned problems are worked upon. We have bigger fish to fry!

Seeing the current scenario of the nation, we are indeed, in a sad state of freedom.

Freedom is a heavy word. You cannot claim to be free until you have broken free from all the chains holding you from attaining success, progress, and happiness. What we require the most today is not showing-off the so-called “patriotism” on selective days, but to serve every day for the betterment of our nation and ourselves.

Turacoz Healthcare Solutions appeal every Indian citizen to wake-up. Your nation needs you. Work towards the real freedom.

“Seek not what your nation can do for you, think what you can do for your nation.”

JAI HIND!

Goodbye Mia!

The world honors the 1st week of August as World Breastfeeding Week. Turacoz Healthcare Solutions brings you some touching stories of breastfeeding. Turacoz invited stories on breastfeeding from the lovely mothers and received some heart-rending stories.

Goodbye Mia is a tear-jerking tale of Mrs. Stuti (changed name). The narrative is as expressed by her:

Pregnancy is the most wonderful phase for any woman & I was relishing this chapter of my life. I and Rachit were trying to have a baby for quite some time and I was on cloud nine when I came to know about my pregnancy. Rachit & I already started searching for the names of a baby girl, yes that was our will!
I have always been fond of girls and wished to be a mother of one and so does Rachit. We didn't know whether we will have a girl or a boy, but we named our baby Mia, wishing she was a girl. We bought a teddy, several dolls, and various other toys. We illuminated and decorated the room like that of a princess.
Eagerly waiting for the D-day, we spent the 9 months. I used to talk to Mia every day, and she listened to her Mumma quietly and sometimes she tried to talk by kicking. Rachit and I were so delighted with this experience and couldn't wait for the day we would see our Mia. By 5 months it didn't even matter to us whether we had a boy or girl. The fact that it would be our child was enough to make us happy and excited.
I joined prenatal yoga classes, kept the diet very healthy and took care of myself in every possible way, just to make sure that our Mia was healthy. And then the day came 15th March 2017 when our princess Mia was born. My happiness knew no bounds on having a girl. I had a normal vaginal delivery.
Mia was born with normal weight, weighing 3.5 kg at the time of birth. I was always informed about the importance of breast milk. I breastfed her. Her latch was good, and she latched on nicely for 15-30 minutes every 1-2 hours. She was having the expected number of wet & dirty diapers.
The feeling of breastfeeding my baby is something I cannot put into words to date. I felt so complete. The lactation experts were making it sure that Mia was breastfed 10-12 times a day. My Mia used to cry a lot when not being breastfed and constantly wanted to get suckled.
I thought to myself that the infants normally cry this much. She would not cry when she held onto my breast. They discharged me after 2 days and we brought Mia to our home. Everyone in my family was so happy to meet her. Few days, she had lost much weight & continued crying hard when not fed. My instincts told me that something was wrong. We went to the doctor, and it shook me up to know that I was producing little to no milk and my Mia was crying out of starvation.
I cried, Mia cried. The doctor told me to either wait for 2-3 days for my milk to come or formula-feed her. I wanted to breastfeed my Mia and after coming home I tried again for the same. That night after suckling up to my breast she slept.
Next morning, she was unresponsive. We rushed to the hospital. She was having no heart rate and was on CPR. They put her on the ventilator, but ultimately, she couldn't survive because of dehydration & cardiac arrest. 28th March 2017, she breathes her last. Doctors were telling the reason for her death and I didn't listen to any as for me the fact was only one, Mia was no more.
It has been more than a year today since Mia left us. I cry every day thinking that if I could have breastfed her properly she would have been alive. Why couldn't I? Had I doubted early, my baby would have started calling me Mumma, the word I wanted to hear the most. But nothing can bring her back now.
It was discovered that Mrs. Stuti had PCOS which somehow went undetected earlier and this was creating issues in her lactation. Also, she doubted late that something was amiss. It was obvious as according to her she was breastfeeding, but the reality was different. Mia succumbed to “hypernatremic dehydration”- a condition caused by insufficient lactation, and cardiac arrest.
We are extremely sorry for the family's loss.

Breastfeeding is extremely vital for a newborn and it should be made sure that the baby is being breastfed properly. With PCOS, appropriate actions should be taken timely to make certain that there are no troubles later in lactation phase. Physical therapies can be practiced during the issue to treat it, if not then the baby can be formula-fed, depending on the situation. Consult your doctor before any step.
Turacoz is proud to promotes the practice of breastfeeding babies by their mothers as it is extremely essential for a newborn in the initial first 6 months.
